styling the seasons – April

April means two things to me. As the Easter holidays fall during April, it always reminds me of spending extra time with family. It’s also the time the magnolia trees blossom. Here on the South Coast of England there are about 3-4 glorious weeks, when I get to witness the magnolia buds appearing, opening and then the petals gently falling from the trees. It’s one of my favourite things of the year, as suddenly the trees burst into life and colour.

I have memories of my Grandma Peggy coming to stay at Easter a lot, always with a box of home baked butterfly cakes in her hands. Of course my sister, brother and I, loved having her around as there was always someone to play with. Lots of card games (Go Fish), and jigsaws are firmly etched in my mind.

For my styling for this month I raided my box of loose photos, and found the ones displayed here. I also found this card from The Magnolia Street Bakery in New York, which I picked up when I lived there, and must have kept all these years. Too perfect not to prop next to these cut magnolia flowers.

There are also three house plants on the mantlepiece, as I am really keen to get more house plants now we have space. House plants are a bit of a new area for me. Back when I was a student I owned quite a few Peace Lilies and Rubber Plants, and always found them very forgiving and easy to look after. We will see how I get on with these.

This month there is a little competition running with the Styling the Seasons challenge, and they have teamed up with at{mine}, an online community where real people share pictures of their homes and interior style. The winners get to attend a floral workshop on April 29th in central London, where two lovely ladies, Caroline of Wild Rubus, and Lou of Littlegreenshed will share how to make a spring wreath and a May Day posy. I can’t think of anything better than playing with some flowers for a whole morning, so this is my entry.

If you would like to enter too, the deadline to get your photos in is Wednesday the 15th (that’s only tomorrow) so if you fancy attending the workshop you need to get a wriggle on. Simply style a surface in your home to represent what April means to you, and share a picture on any social network using the #StylingSpringAtMine and make sure you tag Katy and or Charlotte, the lovely ladies behind the original idea.

To read more about the competition, how to enter, who the judges are, and what the workshop is about head over to Katy’s blog.
